Tips to tackle stress in the workplace 24th Aug 2018

Everybody experiences work-related stress at some point in their careers. A little stress here and there can help to keep you motivated but also shows how much you care about your job. However, there is a fine line between “normal” stress levels, and those that can develop into mental health problems. According to a survey by HSE, last year around 526,000 workers were reported to be suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety and as a result, 12.5 million working days were lost. The main factors cited by respondents were workload pressures including tight deadlines, too much responsibility and a lack of managerial support.

 

When it comes to tackling difficulties in the workplace, the key is to acknowledge the problem and resolve it as soon as you can. We’ve put together some tips and advice to help you manage stress levels and keep you working at your best.  

 

·        Plan your day 

Start the day knowing what you need to do and what to prioritise. A list of tasks as long as your arm will leave you feeling like you’re drowning, whereas setting a prioritised list of reasonable and achievable goals for the day will leave you feeling a sense of accomplishment when you tick each one off. Stay calm and in control of your workload.  

 

·        Take breaks

Breaks are there for a reason, you need time to disconnect from what you’re doing and reset your mind. Take a walk, meet a friend, go shopping – whatever it takes to get you away from your desk and get your legs moving. ·        Talk about it

As the old saying goes, “a problem shared is a problem halved” and this couldn’t be truer for work tasks that feel like a burden. Don’t sit at your desk stressing over something that might quite easily (and quickly) be solved be somebody else in the room. There’s no shame in asking for help when you need it.  

 

·        Know when to say no

Don’t take on more than you can manage and don’t feel bad for saying no. If you start to feel overwhelmed with your workload it might be time to speak to your manager about any assistance you need.  

 

·        Get a good night’s sleep

Sleeping is your time to unwind and completely relax and will enable you to start the day feeling refreshed. The National Sleep Foundation suggests using techniques such as breathing exercises to help you switch off and get your much-needed kip. Getting the right amount of sleep will keep you feeling energised and ready to tackle any potential stress that comes your way.
